Humboldt State University is the northernmost campus of the California State University system. The university is located in Arcata, California, 285 miles north of San Francisco, in Humboldt County. The university campus, nestled in the Redwoods and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is notable for its natural beauty and prime location with respect to outdoor activities. US News and World Report rated HSU 37th among the top Western Master's level universities (2006. )

Humboldt State University started out as a two-year teachers college and has had many names including; Humboldt State Normal School, Humboldt State Teachers College, Humboldt State College, and California State University Humboldt. The name was changed for the last time in 1973 to halt the confusion of acronyms between California State University Hayward (now California State University, East Bay).

The university's student population is approximately 7,680. This is approximately half of the population of Arcata. 18% of students live in on campus housing through the University Housing and Dining Services. University Housing and Dining Services operates five dining facilities and five unique living areas ranging from traditional dormitory style rooms to more modern apartment buildings.

Humboldt is one of only two universities in the state of California to offer a major in botany, the other being Cal Poly Pomona. The Native American Studies major and the undergraduate oceanography majors are also unique to the California State University system. Humboldt offers unique minors including Multi-Cultural Queer Studies, Scuba Diving and Alternative Technology. The university's location on the North Coast provides access to the Pacific Ocean, lagoons, marshes, estuaries, and the Fred Telonchlier Marine Laboratory, which in turn provides opportunities for "hands-on" experiences and research for oceanography and other science majors. Humboldt also offers many master's programs, including biology, forestry, costume design, social sciences and environmental engineering.

The university is divided into three colleges: College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; College of Natural Resources and Sciences; and College of Professional Studies.

The president of the university is Rollin C. Richmond, a noted biologist. The Associated Students president is undergraduate Tony Snow, who is actively involved in several key committees on campus, as well as the Environmental Affairs officer for the California State Student Association. Many of Humboldt's unique programs, such as the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology, Youth Educational Services, and Student Access Gallery, are student-initiated, student-directed, and student-employed programs. The University has one of the strongest Associated Students Incorporations in the California State University system offering more services and programs than any other ASI.

The University is the home campus for many statewide educational leaders. Dr. Marshelle Thobaben, a professor of Nursing, serves as the chair of the CSU Academic Senate. Dr. John Travis, a professor of Political Science, serves as the President of the California Faculty Association. Manolo Platin, a 2005 graduate, was Chairman of the California State Student Association during 2004-2005 and Liaison to the CSU Academic Senate in 2003-2004. Robert Christensen, a current undergraduate was Vice Chair of the California State Student Association in 2005-2006.

Humboldt State has the only Division II football team in California.
