CBC Radio 3 consists of three major parts all devoted to Canadian arts and music: a Sirius Satellite Radio station (channel 94), a weekly podcast from the CBC
Radio 3 website , and streaming audio on the same website. The terrestrial network CBC Radio Two also simulcasts the satellite network on Saturday and Sunday nights.
The satellite network does air some music by international artists in its playlist, but is primarily Canadian content, while the webstream and podcast are 100% Canadian music. The podcast and the CBC Radio One program
Fuse also air as programs on the satellite radio channel.
Operated by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Radio 3 had its genesis in a
1997 plan to launch a radio network devoted to youth culture, complementing CBC Radio One and CBC Radio Two. Although the original proposal was abandoned, a slightly different Radio 3 was launched in
2000 as a pilot project hosted by CBC.ca, the CBC's new media division. In
2003, CBC Radio Two also began airing Radio 3 as a Saturday night program featuring music and performances from the Radio 3 website.
When satellite radio ultimately became a reality, the original proposal was resurrected. The popular service re-launched in December 2005, and the weekend program on CBC Radio Two became a live simulcast of the satellite radio service.
The satellite channel's supplementary services result from the project's popular beginnings: originally a cross between a webzine and an Internet radio stream, the original Radio Three website included both writing and music. The focus now is on radio content. The website consists of a cluster of related sites, all of which offer streaming media -- including 120 Seconds, New Music Canada, Just Concerts, and Roots Music Canada -- and a blog. CBC Radio Three receives much of its content from the New Music Canada website where any Canadian artist can
upload content for others to access. (The French equivalent to CBC Radio 3 is Bandeapart.)
The network's primary studio is located in Vancouver, although some programming originates from Toronto as well.
Regular hosts include Grant Lawrence, Lisa Christiansen, Jay Ferguson, Craig Norris, Tariq Hussain, Lauren Burrows and Chris Murphy, while many Canadian musicians may appear occasionally as guest hosts — recent examples include Joel Plaskett, Carolyn Mark and Nirmala Basnayake. Prior to the launch of the satellite network, the weekend program on CBC Radio Two was hosted by Alexis Mazurin. Following Mazurin's death in the fall of
2005, the main CBC Radio 3 studio in Vancouver was named in his memory.
